A City Born From the Sea

Świnoujście sits at the very tip of northwest Poland, spread across 44 islands where the Baltic Sea meets the Szczecin Lagoon. It is the only city in Poland built entirely on islands — and uniquely, it keeps growing: sea currents have pushed the shoreline 1.5 kilometres northward over the past 200 years, gifting the city with Poland's widest and most celebrated beach.

The city's two great symbols — the Lighthouse, at 68 metres the tallest brick lighthouse in the world, and the Stawa Młyny, a windmill-shaped navigation beacon — have guided sailors safely home for over 160 years. Today Świnoujście is one of Poland's premier health resorts, its beach awarded the prestigious Blue Flag every year since 2006. The promenade stretches an unbroken 12.5 km all the way into Germany — a walk across two countries by the sea.

August is the finest time to visit — long warm days, golden sand and the Baltic at its warmest. What better place to celebrate 40?

✦ A Word from Marcin

I was born and raised on this island. I grew up running on that beach, climbing the lighthouse, cycling the promenade at dusk. Świnoujście isn't just a beautiful place to visit — it is where I come from, where I learned what it means to be close to the sea, to the wind, to something that is bigger than yourself.

Turning 40 here, with my closest friends and our children, means everything. I want the kids to feel the sand between their toes on the widest beach in Poland, to look up at that lighthouse and understand why their dad talks about this place the way he does. Some things are worth passing on — and this island is one of them.

I cannot wait to show you where I come from.
